These are proposed suggested changes to the Blue Book and would resolve some of the ambiguity in the current Modified Production Class in the MSA regulations which are currently giving problems across the country including the Southwest. |

GOOD SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW REGS. I WOULD COME BACK IF THESE WERE PUT IN TO FORCE. I WORRY THAT THE OLD CLASS WOULD NOT BE THE SAME AS MANY WERE SO FED UP WHEN ALL THIS WAS CHANGED THAT THEY NOW ARE MOVING TO THE CIRUITS (I KNOW OF AT LEAST 8 ) AND NOT ONLY THIS THE ENTRY FEES ON THE HILLS NOW ARE GETTING CLOSE TO CIRUIT RACING |

It was interesting to read the regs in this months mag. I have a couple of comments which will affect the majority of competitors any Roadgoing Specialist Production Cars classes (Westfield, caterham etc).
1. The regs state that exhausts must exit from the rear of the car. All kit cars traditionally have side exhausts.
2. The regs also outlaw dry sump lubrication. I feel that this is an integral and important part of a competition car irrespective of the class. Admittedly it is optional but I dont believe it should be prohibited.
Can you outline the process and timescale for the propossed changes please Tony.

I do admit that my suggested wording here does need amending as many cars have side exhausts.

The idea is that the "Roadgoing Production Cars. Saloons and Sports Cars" is for true road going cars. Dry sump lubrication is allowed in the other classes.

These classes are only my suggestion to sort out current interperation at events across the country and would have to be approved by the MSA Speed Committee before they were implemented.

My idea is to ensure nationwide common interpretation for competitors and scrutineers at Speed events to ensure consistency and bring back those who have moved onto other events. |

how about as it is a roadgoing class all cars must be driven to the event. this would certainley even out power levels a little bit if they have to be driven on the road? just an idea. |

Animal,
How would you 'police' your suggestion?
All that would happen is that people would unload off the trailer outside the event, then drive in!
also if you want to make a family day of it, it's almost impractical to come in the competition car. |

alternatively do as they do in street eliminator drag racing. go out for a 20 mile drive in convoy at lunch time and if you dont make it back you dont compete |

The problem with ensuring that road going cars are driven to events, is how do you police this and what rules do you put into place. Someone could trailer a road going car to within 100 yards of the venue and unload the car and drive in on the public highway for 100 yards into the event venue. This would be compliant.
The main thing about a road going car, is that it must be fully road legal in all aspects (tax, MOT if applicable, insurance, tyres and configuration etc) and these would have to be checked at scrutineering; so how it gets to the venue and home does not matter as it cannot be easily defined or policed: or am I wrong?
The 20 mile lunchtime convoy is an interesting idea, but not practical for hillclimbs or sprints I think.

Checking the documents is easy, but what about the checking of tyres. Would scrutineers give themselves sufficient time to put a depth gauge to all 4 tyres, on all road going cars, especially as these cars will be the first ones out for practice. I say this, because well worn road tyres, i.e virtually no tread, gives an advantge. But on the road they would be illegal.
Perhaps road going/limited production classes should revert to list 1A tyres only. Anyone wanting to use 1B go into modified classes. _________________ ......along came a spider!! |

Currently road going classes are checked by scrutineers to ensure that they comply with the class regualations (some events use list 1A, some list 1A and 1B and some "E" marked) , so checking tyres to see if they are street legal and "E" marked is not a problem, but what does this really mean?
Well a check to see that they are "E" marked is a read of the side wall and a visual look to check that the tread depth is above the legal minimum (1.6mm), which is easy to spot. Anything marginal will need a depth gauge to check, which some scrutineers already carry.
It is easier to check for the "E" mark than checking if tyres are in list 1A or 1B, especially with the large number of tyres on the lists.
The main thing about using "E" marked tyres for road going classes means that any road going tyre can be used, and makes life similar for competitors and officials alike. |
